Try new ways of getting around Monaco between 16 and 22 September

Semaine de la Mobilité ©DR

At the initiative of the Department of the Environment, the Principality is getting involved in European Mobility Week from 16 to 22 September 2016, in partnership with the Electric Vehicles Club, Monaco Sustainable Development (MC2D) and Monaco City Hall.

The aim of the event is to encourage everyone to try different ways of getting around: walking, cycling, electric car, car sharing and public transport.

On Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 September, a mobility festival will be held in Larvotto (Rose des Vents), from 10 am to 6 pm.

Over the course of the two days, visitors will be able to try out – for free – two-wheel and four-wheel electric vehicles provided by BMW, Renault, Tesla, Go Electrix and the Automobile Club of Monaco. This will be a chance to get behind the wheel of electric cars such as the Twizy, Zoe, BMW i3 and e-Mehari, or to take some electric two-wheelers for a spin.

There will also be an opportunity to test CAM’s electric bikes and the Twizy vehicles used by the Mobee car sharing scheme.

The Mediterranean Institute for Market Research and Sustainable Development (IMEDD) will present and lead games on the theme of mobility.

The youngest visitors will be able to take part in Bio-Logika, a fun and educational game which raises awareness of the different types of mobility: car, bike, bus, walking, etc. A variety of recreational workshops will also be offered.

For 5–12 year olds, there will be a number of challenges available:

  • Mobility race – on a bike or scooter
  • Design your own smart city
  • LIM Quiz
  • Describe your town by bike, etc.

Various recreational, sports and educational workshops will allow children to compete with their parents in a fun atmosphere.

Saturday 17 September

To mark Public Transport Day, buses operated by the Monegasque Bus Company (CAM) will be free.

An electric motorbike circuit for children (ages 4 to 15) and adults will be set up on the Larvotto esplanade from 10 am to 6 pm.

Sunday 18 September

From 10 am to 6 pm, it will be Cycling Sunday: Avenue Princesse Grace will be partly closed to motorised vehicles to enable everyone, young and old alike, to ride within a safe zone in Larvotto. Families and friends will be able to get together on bikes (electric or otherwise), roller skates and even skateboards.

From 2 pm, professional electric motorcyclists will present a “freeride” performance to musical accompaniment!

On the margins of Mobility Week events, and with a view to expanding so-called “soft” transport options, three new electric bike stations are planned for Monaco, to complement existing provision. The selected sites are as follows:

  • Place du Palais
  • Avenue Hector Otto
  • Quai Louis II

Sites are under review to further improve the Principality’s network and expand availability in the Condamine district, near the new Bougainvilliers, Jardin d’Apolline and Hélios state-owned residential buildings, and in Monte-Carlo.

Radio Monaco will be promoting European Mobility Week throughout the week.
