Marine Pollution is Limited on the Offshore Urban Extension Construction Site

On Thursday, 18 May, in the early afternoon, an accidental spill of biodegradable oil, due to a ruptured crane hose, occurred in the area of the construction site of the offshore urban extension.

The company concerned immediately implemented the following measures:

- putting a dam in place to contain the pollution

- installing a skimmer inside the dam to pump up the oil spillage.

In addition, the company immediately informed the Urban Offshore Extension Mission and the Department of Maritime Affairs, sailors from which visited the site.  They asked the operator to use additional methods of pollution control by installing absorbent rolls to soak up traces of oil that had arisen from the ship prior to the installation of the dam.

Armelle Roudaut-Lafon, Director of Maritime Affairs, stated that "The Company's reaction is to be welcomed.  It immediately informed us of the incident, took urgent measures to limit the pollution and responded without delay to our request for additional measures."

Jean-Luc Nguyen, Director of the Urbamer Mission, explained that "This incident enabled us to assess the responsiveness of all stakeholders and evaluate compliance with the emergency procedures established between the State, L'Anse Du Portier SAM and all the maritime operators."

This morning, a team from the Department of Maritime Affairs Directorate visited the site and confirmed that there was no trace of pollution from this biodegradable oil on the water.
