Respiratory Medicine: Princess Grace Hospital takes preventive measures to improve care

During the construction period for the new hospital, excellent care and patient safety are the key concerns of the Prince’s Government. The Princess Grace Hospital management team has therefore decided to undertake measures to maintain the air handling system within the Respiratory Medicine Department. To ensure that patients continue to receive quality care under the best possible conditions, they will be transferred to the Orthopaedics 2 Unit from Friday 8 January.

The construction work underway in the area surrounding Princess Grace Hospital as part of the new hospital project, particularly demolition and excavation work, will increase environmental dust levels. These levels are regularly assessed and analysed so that preventive and corrective action can be taken as required.

In the interests of protecting its patients, Princess Grace Hospital intends to check, maintain and, where necessary, upgrade the air handlers and air conditioning units within the Respiratory Medicine Department. This Department provides care for patients who are particularly sensitive in this respect and it overlooks the current construction zone. It is therefore essential to ensure that certain vulnerable patients are not affected by the nuisance caused by the dust generated, and to take action to guard against any risk of respiratory problems.

These measures are simple but require staff and technical equipment and cannot be carried out in the presence of patients. The Department will therefore be temporarily closed for approximately three weeks. In order to ensure continuity of care and treatment, Respiratory Medicine Department patients will be transferred to the Orthopaedics 2 Unit from Friday 8 January. During this period, the Orthopaedics 2 Unit will strengthen cooperation with the teams at the Monaco Institute of Sports Medicine and Surgery (IM2S).
