The Monaco Assessment - A new step forward for biodiversity conservation in Antarctica

On 5 July 2017, a decisive new step forward in terms of biodiversity conservation in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean region was taken in Monaco, once again highlighting the Principality’s leadership in this area.

The objective of the second workshop on “Antarctica and the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011–2020”, opened by Ms Isabelle Rosabrunetto, Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, and closed by Professor Denis Allemand, Scientific Director of the Monaco Scientific Centre, was to develop a series of specific measures to guarantee or improve biodiversity conservation and protection in the region. The experts also worked to identify and define a series of indicators which could help the countries involved in putting in place conservation measures in Antarctica to evaluate the effectiveness and success of these action plans.

The outcomes of the first workshop, held in Monaco in 2015, showed that, overall, the state of biodiversity in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean was similar to and no better than that for the rest of the globe. However, experts stressed that “...despite this rather pessimistic picture, there are numerous possibilities to take positive action to improve the situation in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean.”

Within the context of the overall Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011–2020, defined in the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the actions set out in Monaco during the second Monaco Assessment will help to establish global and effective conservation of biodiversity on a planetary scale.

In conclusion, Professor Denis Allemand made clear that: “The actions and indicators identified during this second workshop will substantially improve the situation in the region and should be warmly welcomed by all those with an interest in this issue.” He added: “I can assure you that the Monaco Scientific Centre and the Prince’s Government will continue to support biodiversity conservation in Antarctica, and to promote research and basic scientific results to define and support these action plans.”
