A fresh boost for the Pelagos Agreement

The Extraordinary Meeting of the Parties to the Pelagos Agreement was held on 9 February 2018 in Monaco’s Rainier III Auditorium. It was chaired by Mr Cyril Gomez, Director General of the Ministry of Public Works, the Environment and Urban Development. The event was attended by representatives from the three member countries (France, Italy and Monaco) as well as observers.*

The meeting provided an opportunity to review the activities undertaken over the previous three-year period, review expenditure in 2017, and adopt the work programme for 2018–2019.

Among the resolutions adopted by the Parties, some focus particularly on standardising methods of research into marine mammal populations in the Pelagos Sanctuary (including satellite telemetry), as well as the terms of reference for assessing the impact of plastics on marine mammals and for identifying areas where plastic is accumulating in the Sanctuary.

The Parties also decided to continue and strengthen cooperation with local districts and marine protected areas within the Pelagos Sanctuary, as well as with marine mammal sanctuaries further afield. An international workshop bringing together the various stakeholders in the marine environment will be held at the end of 2018 in Italy to discuss possible solutions which will reduce the risk of collisions between ships and large cetaceans.
