Grants from the Pasteur Institute – Career of Dr. Kampo, From Timbuktu

As part of the Framework Agreement signed in 2010 between the Prince's Government and the Pasteur Institute, the Department of International Cooperation allocates study grants each year to young health professionals with great potential who originate from the African continent.

One such professional is Dr. Mamadou Kampo, aged 36, a gynaecologist and obstetrician at the Timbuktu Hospital in Mali.  The Monegasque cooperation grant was a great opportunity for this young Malian doctor, because, thanks to this support, he was able to join the specialised Master's in Public Health and Infectious Risk at the Pasteur School/CNAM, which he was so keen to undertake.  Moreover, his end-of-study work experience took place at the Arnaud Fontanet Unit – a very stimulating experience for a young doctor!  Arnaud Fontanet is an eminent epidemiologist and Director of the Epidemiology Unit for Emerging Diseases at the Pasteur Institute in Paris.

During this diploma course, Dr. Kampo acquired new skills in public health and improved his overall medical practice.  He now has the tools to deal more effectively with the complex, and unfortunately often dramatic, health problems that he encounters on a daily basis while carrying out his profession in northern Mali.

Dr. Kampo now aims to join a national research team in his country and contribute to monitoring and improving maternal and neonatal health indicators in Africa.
