Monday 16 October – World Food Day

The Prince's Government is strongly committed to combating hunger in the world, targeting the most vulnerable populations (refugees, pregnant women, children, small farmers, etc.,) as a priority.

In 2017, the Prince's Government allocated EUR 7 million for participation in international efforts in the field of food security, with a view to achieving the United Nations "Zero Hunger" Sustainable Development Goal.

This aid is used to support multi-annual programmes and emergency humanitarian aid.  For example, in Burundi, Mali and Madagascar, Monaco's Official Development Assistance supports the World Food Programme (WFP) school canteen programme, which enables children to be given one meal a day.

In Senegal, since 2010, the Prince's Government has been supporting a project to improve milk production and milk collection in a region where livestock farming is the main, and sometimes only, source of income for animal breeders' families.

As another example, in Burkina Faso, Monaco supported capacity building for local players to prevent malnutrition and facilitate its management in a region where more than one in ten people were malnourished.

Finally, the Principality takes part in the Committee for Food Security, an international political forum organised by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).  The last session was held from 9 to 13 October 2017, in the presence of a Monegasque delegation (see the news report on the "FAO - 44th session of the Committee on World Food Security" here).

Today, 815 million people throughout the world are suffering from hunger, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, where a quarter of the population remains undernourished.
