The Prince’s Government and the Sovereign Order of Malta have recently entered into a new partnership to support medical and social centres for the elderly and vulnerable in the areas surrounding Beirut.

The Prince’s Government and the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta Representative Office in the Principality of Monaco have been bound by a framework agreement since 2012. The two sides have supported numerous humanitarian and development aid projects, including providing assistance to a welcome programme for refugees from countries of the Southern Mediterranean arriving by sea on the Italian island of Lampedusa.

In Senegal, the installation of audiovisual equipment at the Order of Malta’s hospital in Dakar made it possible to establish a teaching and training tool for local doctors, focusing particularly on leprosy surgery.

More recently, the Order’s Representative Office in the Principality and the Department of International Cooperation have committed to several long-term projects in Lebanon, aimed at strengthening the assistance provided to the large number of Syrian refugees, especially women and children.

The provision of support to medical and social centres for the elderly and vulnerable, and particularly people with disabilities, in the areas surrounding Beirut is the latest addition to this already substantive partnership.

Finally, it should be noted that the Embassy of the Sovereign Order of Malta in the Principality has, for the last nine years, been involved in providing transport and treatment for children from Palestine and Africa as part of the operations carried out by the Monaco Cardiothoracic Centre.

To mark the retirement of H.E. Mr Peter K. Murphy, who served as the first Ambassador of the Sovereign Order of Malta to the Principality, Monaco’s Official Development Assistance Authorities would like to pay tribute to the work of this American career diplomat, who is held in very high regard.
