ANTANANARIVO, 25 November 2016 – In the margins of the Summit of La Francophonie, the Government of the Republic of Madagascar and the Government of the Principality of Monaco signed a framework agreement aimed at strengthening existing cooperation on health issues, with a focus on providing better access for vulnerable groups to quality health care.

As part of its international cooperation policy, Monaco has supported Madagascar on numerous health issues since 2000. These areas include: maternal and infant health; combating malnutrition, especially among children; controlling major pandemics (malaria, HIV) and neglected diseases (sickle-cell anaemia); disability; and reproductive health. By formalising this relationship of over 15 years’ standing, the two countries are today demonstrating their shared desire to take their partnership to a new level.

“Our cooperative links, rooted in time, mutual respect and trust, are testament to the quality of our relationship,” stressed Mr Serge Telle, Minister of State of the Principality of Monaco. “I am proud to stand alongside the Madagascan authorities and contribute to improving health conditions for the population of this beautiful country, which the Monaco Government counts as a friend and leading cooperation partner.”

The framework agreement provides for a regular political dialogue on the Government of the Republic of Madagascar’s health priorities, as set out in its national strategy for 2015–2019. It will facilitate the implementation of joint action, through the identification of projects and the pooling of resources. It will also increase the impact of investments made by the Government of the Principality of Monaco to support the Madagascan Government’s health objectives. Finally, it will help to mobilise stakeholders from across the public and private sector who are engaged in this field to launch innovative and structural projects.

“In our updated national health policy, all of our activities must lead towards strengthening our health system and universal health coverage. The development of this partnership is one of our priorities because the objectives set cannot be successfully achieved without the active participation of all those involved in the health sector,” confirmed Professor Mamy Lalatiana Andriamanarivo, Madagascar’s Minister of Public Health. “The collaboration between the Principality of Monaco and Madagascar has always been excellent, producing tangible results such as the one we see today with the construction of this magnificent building.* The signature of this new agreement will only serve to strengthen still further the existing productive relationship between the two countries.”
