A Monegasque delegation, comprised of Mr. Alexandre Bordero, Director of Health Affairs and Ms. Chrystel Chanteloube, Third Secretary at the Permanent Mission of Monaco to the United Nations Office in Geneva, took part in the work of the 67th session of the World Health Organization's Regional Committee for Europe*, held in Budapest from 11 to 14 September.

This event took place in the presence of high-level political figures, including the Prime Ministers of Hungary and Greece, Mr. Orban and Mr. Tsipras.  It was attended by representatives of the 53 member States of the region, who had gathered to discuss the main topical health issues and challenges at a European level.  The WHO's new Director, Dr. Tedros, was present at the discussions and emphasised that although the European region is one of the most advanced with regard to universal health coverage, it also has major inequalities and faces many challenges, in particular non-communicable diseases.

The debates focused mainly on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Programme through the European "Health 2020" policy framework, a consideration of the environmental determinants of health, and preparing for health emergencies.

The Monegasque delegation spoke in particular on the subject of environment and health, recalling the importance the Prince's Government places on combating climate change in order to safeguard human health.  The Principality also announced the recent signing of a health cooperation agreement with France, making it possible for it to overcome the difficulties encountered in implementing the main capacities required under the International Health Regulations and thus strengthen its preparations for health emergencies.

*The Regional Committee is the WHO's decision-making body for the European Region.  Every year, it brings together the representatives of the region's 53 member States.
