On 9 April, the Permanent Mission of Monaco to the UN  celebrated the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, in the presence of numerous dignitaries and well-known figures.  Representatives from the United Nations and the International Olympic Committee and sportspeople, including former NBA champion Dikembe Mutombo, as well as members of civil society, took part in this event, sharing their experiences and their vision of sport for development and peace.

The way in which sport can reduce inequality and contribute to the empowerment of women and girls was highlighted by Benita Mosley, gold medallist at the 1984 Olympic Games, who is now CEO of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, and various other celebrities from the world of sport.

At this event, marathon runner Tegla Loroupe expressed her gratitude and appreciation to H.S.H. the Sovereign Prince for his Foundation's visit (Tegla Loroupe Peace Foundation) to Kenya in 2009.

Finally, Tahl Leibovitz, multiple paralympic tennis table champion, spoke of his social commitment, and Peter Nelson, of HBO Sport and Jordan Metzl, a specialist in sports medicine, highlighted the importance of sport in bringing communities together.
