The advent of the monarchy

1612 : Adopting the title of Prince

“By the grace of God, Prince of Monaco”: in 1612, in order to cement his authority in the face of the Spanish, who had become too oppressive during his youth, the Lord of Monaco took the title of Prince. In 1619, the dynastic cypher appeared, while the family name disappeared. This is how Honoré Grimaldi became Honoré II.

1633 : Spanish recognition

Spain, the powerful nation which protected Monaco, recognised the monarchisation of Monaco in 1633, which consequently reinforced the power of the Prince to the detriment of the power of the municipality. The weakening of the role of intermediary bodies led to the establishment of an absolute monarchy which wielded divine right over its people.
