In line with the ambitions set by H.S.H. Prince Albert II, the Principality of Monaco implements an economic policy based on the objectives of sustainability and environmental preservation.
The Administration of the Principality leads by example through a proactive approach to eco-responsibility. Whether in terms of strategic investments, urban development, mobility, preservation of natural heritage, water management, green spaces, energy, or waste, every aspect of government action reflects this commitment to the country’s sustainable development.
State investment in certain energy transition–related infrastructures thus generates added value and employment. This is notably the case with the development of thalassothermal loops, the deployment of the Monaco ON electric vehicle charging network, and the implementation of a deposit-return system covering the entire territory of the Principality: MaConsigne. These investments also help steer the Monegasque economy toward more locally anchored value creation.
Beyond State investments, the mobilization of associative and private stakeholders within the Monegasque community contributes at all levels to this dynamic.
The National Pact for the Energy Transition provides a framework for its 411 signatory entities, which are engaged in a virtuous process and, while each contributes to the overall success of public policies aimed at decarbonizing the economy, are also preparing for their future. Although not subject to regulations requiring carbon reporting of their activities, Monegasque companies must nevertheless respond to the growing expectations of their clients and stakeholders in this area, and may also be indirectly affected by an increasing number of foreign environmental regulations (hotels, banks, exporting companies, etc.).
This collective mobilization also strengthens the attractiveness and international profile of the Principality. The Department of Tourism and Congresses has therefore established a dedicated unit tasked with identifying and implementing all possible improvements in both business and leisure tourism, in close collaboration with all relevant stakeholders.
The Government is making energy savings
Since 2006 the State has been committed to a programme of energy saving in public buildings. The overall reduction in energy consumption on fifty different sites has reached 26%.
The European Energy Award certification

This process will be driven and coordinated on an annual basis through thematic workshops and steering committee meetings.On 13 and 14 November 2014, Monaco hosted the Annual General Meeting of the EEA Forum, at the end of which the EEA certification was awarded to the Prince's Government.
