Preserving and showcasing our heritage
The Prince's Government prioritises the conservation, enhancement and access to the Principality's cultural local heritage.
The Heritage Fund managed by Department of Cultural Affairs is responsible for fulfilling all heritage-related duties. Its mission is to study, preserve, restore, promote and pass on the national heritage to future generations. It carries out inventories of intangible and movable cultural heritage in the custody of the State and updates them, assists in the identification and location of immovable cultural heritage elements, prepares and designs any measures to promote or implement the preservation of national heritage, and organises European Heritage Days.
The Audiovisual Institute of Monaco is responsible for collecting, preserving, archiving and promoting the Principality's audiovisual heritage. Every year, it organises a themed season of screenings and special evenings showcasing Monaco's archive collections.
Other entities active in the field of heritage:
- The Heritage Council formulates proposals to guide or improve the identification, protection, preservation, promotion, enhancement and transmission of the national heritage to future generations
- The Commission des Orgues (Organ Commission) is responsible for overseeing all matters relating to organs in the Principality, including: the maintenance and promotion of the organ collection, the restoration and construction of instruments, the publication of books and recording of discs, and all other issues relating to organs in the Principality
In addition, the Principality has acceded to the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH), which aims to preserve practices, representations, expressions, knowledge and skills recognised as part of their intangible cultural heritage.
The Government therefore supports and assists associations working to safeguard and pass on traditions, language and festive events from one generation to the next, thereby helping to maintain the Principality's unique cultural diversity.
