Sustaining excellence in education

The Monegasque education system is based on the curricula of the French national education system, with a few specific features that contribute to the quality of the education provided in Monaco.
Its excellence is reflected year upon year by the impressive results obtained by students concluding their secondary education and the higher education courses they progress on to.
This system boasts many specific features:
- Enhanced English language teaching from nursery to Year 13. This orientation of the Monegasque education system is also illustrated by an intensive English option from Year 4, as well as an international stream and a European section open to upper secondary students
- Teaching French as a "foreign language" in schools, to encourage the integration of non-French-speaking pupils
- A programme to encourage reading
- Promoting national culture by teaching the Monegasque language and the history of Monaco
- A programme of cultural education and artistic awareness, in collaboration with the Department of Cultural Affairs, the Opera, Ballets, Orchestra and Theatre
- Partnerships with the Principality's scientific and heritage bodies, such as the Museum of Prehistoric Anthropology, the Oceanographic Museum, the Exotic Garden, and the New National Museum of Monaco, as well as with the Department of Urban Amenities
- The teaching of sport is an integral part of the education system, with physical education and sports lessons available from Year 2 and swimming lessons from age five, taught by specialist teachers
- Sports classes with special timetables for intensive sports from secondary school onwards, and "elite sports" classes from high school onwards, for top-level athletes
- Music classes with special timetables, from Year 2 until secondary school, in partnership with the Rainier III Academy of Music
