Prolonged exposure to heat can lead to dehydration or heatstroke, which may sometimes be severe. Infants, young children, pregnant women, older persons and people living with chronic illnesses are particularly vulnerable.

Healthy individuals are not immune, however. Athletes, outdoor workers and anyone exposed to heat for prolonged periods should also adopt the appropriate precautions to protect themselves.

A few simple measures can help prevent the effects of heat:

  • Drink at least 1.5 litres of water throughout the day;
  • Cool down regularly;
  • Limit outings and avoid physical activity during the hottest hours of the day;
  • Keep homes cool by closing shutters and windows during daytime hours;
  • Check regularly on relatives and neighbours, particularly those who are isolated or vulnerable.

Everyone’s vigilance is essential to protect the most vulnerable and to get through periods of hot weather safely.

In the event of illness, heatstroke or any emergency, dial 112.
