2025 tourism survey: Monaco records more than 6.7 million visits, generating almost €1.4 billion in direct spending

Monaco Statistics (IMSEE) and the Tourist and Convention Authority (DTC) published the results of their survey on tourism numbers and visitor spending in the Principality on Tuesday 7 July. The survey of more than 17,000 visitors* was carried out between January 2025 and January 2026, and highlights the growing importance of tourism for Monaco’s economy.

An ever-more attractive destination

In 2025, Monaco recorded almost 6.7 million visits*, confirming its appeal both with people from the nearby region and international travellers.

Of these visits, 92.5% were made by same-day visitors* who came to explore the Principality without staying overnight. The remaining 7.5% were made by tourists* who stayed for at least one night. Although tourists represent a smaller share of visitors, they have a significant economic impact.

Overall, visitors spent 9.3 million days in Monaco and more than 1.4 million overnight stays. Tourists spent an average of 3.8 days in the Principality, compared with 1.2 days for day-trippers. Hotels remain the preferred type of accommodation, accounting for more than 7 out of 10 stays.

A loyal and international visitor base

Almost half of all trips were made by people living in neighbouring France, making that country’s Monaco’s biggest local market.

However, tourists staying at least one night have a much more international profile. Visitors from countries outside the European Union accounted for 42% of visits with at least one overnight stay in Monaco.

Couples were the most common type of visitor group (37%), followed by families (32.7%).

As expected, leisure and holidays remain the main reasons for visiting Monaco, accounting for almost 95% of trips.

Most visitors travelled to the Principality by car or rental vehicle (42.6% of visits) or by train (33.3%), whilst visitors staying in Monaco mainly travelled around the country by taxi (34.8%).

A major contribution to Monaco’s economy

The survey confirms the economic importance of tourism for the Principality.

On average, a same-day visitor spends €76 per day, while a tourist spends €348 per day. Taking the average length of stay into account, total spending is €85 per visit for same-day visitors and €1,670 per visit for tourists.

Visitors from the Middle East recorded the highest levels of spending, exceeding €1,000 per day per person during their stay in Monaco.

In total, visitors’ direct spending was estimated at almost €1.4 billion in 2025. That figure represents 6.8% of all revenue generated by businesses in Monaco, excluding the financial and insurance sectors.

Overnight visitors generate most economic value

Although overnight visitors accounted for only 7.5% of recorded visits, they generated 61.4% of the tourism sector’s economic benefits for the Principality.

These figures underline the strategic importance of attracting high-value international visitors, alongside local visitors who account for the majority of trips to the country. They also demonstrate Monaco’s ability to combine attractiveness, high-quality services, and strong economic performance.
