Drought: Prince's Government activates the "Vigilance" level

To encourage more responsible water use in response to a deteriorating situation, the Prince's Government has activated the "Vigilance" level of its drought response framework. This initial stage is intended to raise awareness among all water users and encourage the adoption of good water-saving practices. At this stage, it does not introduce any restrictions on water use.

This decision comes as the Principality, like the rest of the region, is experiencing a significant rainfall deficit. Since the beginning of the year, rainfall recorded in Monaco has been more than 50% below seasonal averages. In this context, the Government has chosen to act now in order to encourage a collective effort before the situation requires more restrictive measures.

As the first stage of the drought response framework, the "Vigilance" level relies on everyone's commitment. Residents are encouraged to adopt a number of simple everyday measures, such as running washing machines and dishwashers only with full loads, limiting garden watering, choosing water-efficient appliances and fittings, and avoiding unnecessary water consumption. These simple eco-friendly actions, which are within everyone's reach, will help preserve water resources over the long term.

At the same time, the main professional sectors concerned are being provided with specific guidance encouraging them to implement measures suited to their activities. In particular, they are encouraged, wherever possible, to postpone swimming pool filling and emptying operations, use water-efficient equipment, reschedule certain water discharges and recycle cleaning water whenever conditions allow.

Preserving water resources is a shared responsibility that depends on the commitment of residents, businesses and public authorities alike. The Prince's Government will continue to monitor the situation closely and will adapt its response progressively, responsibly and proportionately as circumstances evolve.
