Monaco's Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe: Isabelle BERRO-AMADEÏ takes part in the commemoration of the Holocaust of the Roma and Sinti at Auschwitz-Birkenau
On 2 August 2026, on the occasion of the European Roma Holocaust Memorial Day, Isabelle BERRO-AMADEÏ, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, took part, in her capacity as Chair of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, in the official ceremony held at the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum.
In her address, she recalled that the duty to remember is not limited to preserving the memory of the victims, but calls for constant vigilance against all forms of hatred, racism, antisemitism, antigypsyism, discrimination and the normalisation of exclusion. She also stressed that remembrance is one of the cornerstones of peace and of the defence of Europe's democratic values.
Ms Isabelle BERRO-AMADEÏ also reaffirmed the Council of Europe's commitment to Holocaust education, combating Holocaust denial, preserving sites of memory, and promoting recognition of the genocide of the Roma and Sinti*.
Alongside the commemoration, she also took part in a meeting with young Roma and Sinti and Holocaust survivors, dedicated to passing on the memory of the Holocaust to future generations.
* The Roma and Sinti are two communities belonging to the Romani people. During the night of 2 to 3 August 1944, more than 4,300 men, women and children were murdered at the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp. This event has become the symbol of the Holocaust of the Roma and Sinti, during which up to 500,000 people were persecuted and killed by the Nazi regime.
