Mobilising Monegasque diplomacy
News posts
With a presence in a number of countries and involvement in the majority of multilateral organisations, Monegasque diplomats spread the values of the Principality and its Princes around the world, focusing particularly on environmental protection and development.
Today, Monegasque diplomacy relies on a diplomatic corps comprising 17 ambassadors and 25 diplomats accredited to 30 States and the major international organisations. This is complemented by a network of 132 active consuls in 85 countries. Monaco maintains diplomatic relations with a total of 161 States.
In bilateral relations, the Principality pursues a policy that aims to showcase Monaco’s excellence in the fields of culture, sport, science and the economy, and to build strong, balanced political relationships.
In partnership with teams from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Monegasque diplomats participate in the work of international organisations (United Nations and many of its technical agencies, Council of Europe, OSCE, OIF, etc.), bringing its tolerant, moderate views to the table at major multilateral negotiations.
As a State Party to numerous conventions, the Principality takes part in international reviews and submits to the compliance procedures and assessments of specialist agencies (Human Rights Committee, Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, MONEYVAL, GRECO, GRETA, etc.).
At a time when international relations are complex and volatile, a web of interconnected challenges, Monegasque diplomacy is stepping up to defend its commitment to dialogue and the human values by which it has always been guided. Monegasque diplomats are active on key issues such as promoting peace and international solidarity, supported by a continuous increase in Official Development Assistance (ODA), primarily directed towards African and Mediterranean countries. Monaco’s ODA prioritises support for the most vulnerable communities and protection of basic human rights, targeting the 17 Sustainable Development Goals for 2030, adopted by the United Nations in 2015.
Thanks to the historical mobilisation of its Princes, maintained today by H.S.H. Prince Albert II, the Principality stands out for its unwavering commitment to environmental protection and the safeguarding of the seas and oceans, advocating for coordinated responses to the global challenges posed by climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. The country plays an active role in major international conferences on these issues (the COPs on Climate and Biodiversity, the Ocean Conferences) and in negotiations on new instruments, such as those which led to the adoption of the BBNJ agreement on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction, or the current negotiations on a plastic pollution treaty.
