Protecting biodiversity and preventing heat islands
The Prince's Government considers the natural environment essential for the quality of life and Monaco's overall attractiveness and, therefore, strives to conserve, enhance and integrate nature within the urban landscape.
The Principality of Monaco's commitment to conserving, restoring and enhancing biodiversity, particularly to combat the effects of climate change, led to the adoption (in 2021) of the National Biodiversity Strategy for 2030.
The National Biodiversity Strategy aims to structure, coordinate, and promote government initiatives and those of the various Monegasque stakeholders working to protect biodiversity. The strategy includes an action plan to boost the natural environment, thus enabling the Principality to adapt to the effects of climate change (improving air quality, combating urban heat islands, creating cool, inviting areas, etc.). Protecting biodiversity is part of a collaborative effort involving a range of sectors, from urban development and health to commerce and the economy.
A linchpin of this strategy is the renaturation of the city, carried out by the Ministry of Public Works, the Environment and Urban Development in collaboration with Grant Associates, a landscape architecture firm specialising in creating and developing ecological spaces in urban areas. As part of the overall landscape and biodiversity development plan, landscape designs will be tailored to each district to create greener, more biodiverse landscapes and welcoming public spaces in Monaco.
