Monaco Cycling Criterium 2026: What Traffic Adjustments Are Planned?

Port Hercule will host the 51st Monaco Cycling Criterium this Sunday 22 March.

Travel has a significant impact on the environment, public health and economic development. This is why the Prince's Government's policy aims to foster solutions capable of improving living conditions for residents, limiting health risks and boosting economic development. This will involve a shift in the balance between the various modes of transport and the advancement of soft mobility.

Urban transport

The Compagnie des Autobus de Monaco (Monegasque Bus Company), regularly upgrades its resources to improve the quality of service (increased public transport timetables, night buses, mixed-mode transport, trialling on-demand transport with the ClicBus service). There's also an affordable fare structure, and new-generation information displays, available on both the buses and at the stops so passengers can track live bus times, and, of course, plans to decarbonise the entire fleet by 2030.

The "Carte Azur" and the "Pass Sud Azur", which are valid on the Monegasque bus network, entitle passengers to travel around the Alpes-Maritimes with a single season ticket that can be used on several public transport networks.

Public car parks

The Principality's public car parks have pricing policies designed to encourage the use of public transport and eco-friendly travel. Season ticket holders receive a discount if they have an electric or hybrid electric/petrol vehicle emitting less than 98g/km of CO2.

A discounted rate is also available for car sharers. The Salines car park, which opened in April 2024, is located at the entrance to the city and offers a shuttle bus service to the Monte-Carlo and Condamine districts, with few stops in between. Park and Ride offers encourage visitors to leave their cars behind when visiting the Principality.

To further incentivise users, the car parks also display live information on space availability for each neighbourhood and each car park.

New transport services

Several innovative travel services have recently been launched:

  • The Monabike electrically-assisted bicycle service
  • The Mobee free-floating car-sharing service
  • The KLAXIT car-sharing service
  • The ClicBus on-demand transportation service

The Citymapper, Waze and Monapass mobile apps provide live information on the availability and location of these services, as well as traffic conditions. The YourMonaco app includes a list of these tools and provides users with information on how to access them.

  • TER trains

Monaco Railway Station welcomed eight million passengers in 2023. The Principality of Monaco is contributing funds to this service, specifically to improve transport conditions for cross-border commuters: five TER trains purchased by the Prince's Government have been integrated into the French regional rail network, contributing to their transport on offer, with a service running every 15 minutes in the mornings and evenings during rush hour.

  • Public transport links

The area's unique layout has given rise to a network of mechanised public transport links (escalators, travelators, and lifts), making it easier to get around the city on foot. Today, there are 33 mechanised public transport links, comprising around a hundred free systems, operating 24 hours a day.

  • Electric and hybrid electric vehicles

The government is committed to encouraging the use of clean or low-pollution vehicles.

The Principality of Monaco launched a pioneering grant scheme almost 30 years ago to encourage the use of electric and hybrid electric vehicles. This incentive was first made available for professional electric vehicles in 1994, extended to private-use vehicles in 2002, to hybrid vehicles in 2004, electric bicycles in 2018, and then to two-wheelers and electric vehicles over 3.5 tonnes used to transport goods in 2023.

The Prince's Government is progressively replacing its car fleet with electric and hybrid electric vehicles.

The Government's initiatives to promote electric vehicles also include free annual vehicle registration stickers, dedicated on-street parking, and free access to recharging facilities.

Monaco ON a network of charging points for electric vehicles

Monaco ON offers electric vehicle users on-street fast and semi-fast charging points (each with space for two vehicles), also available in public car parks.

The YourMonaco app features a map displaying live availability of charging points.
