CORONAVIRUS : Italian measures do not impact cross-border workers in the Principality

On Monday evening, the Italian Government announced that the “protected area” would be extended to cover the entire country. This measure prohibits people from travelling except for reasons of health, work or other necessity.

Nearly 4,200 Italians work in the public and private sectors in Monaco.

The Prince’s Government has been in contact with the Italian authorities to determine the scope of these measures and can confirm that they do not affect the numerous employees resident in Italy who commute to work in the Principality of Monaco every day.

The vast majority of Italian nationals come from the Ventimiglia region, which has never been included on the list of risk areas.

The Prince’s Government has also obtained assurances from the French authorities that workers from Italy will be able to travel through French territory. The Alpes-Maritimes prefecture has confirmed that the French–Italian borders remain open, so there are no restrictions on access to France.

The Prince’s Government has also informed social partners of these guidelines, which should not result in any changes to everyday life for workers travelling from Italy or their employers.

The Prince’s Government remains in constant contact with the Italian and French authorities to assess any potential developments in the situation.
