COVID-19 - measures extended until 19 February inclusive

The measures that have been in place since 11 January, including a curfew from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., are set to expire at midnight on 27 January. H.S.H. Prince Albert II has decided to extend all of the health measures currently in place until 19 February inclusive. This decision is based on recommendations from the Prince’s Government developed in consultation with the National Council through the Joint Monitoring Committee.

The virus continues to circulate actively in the Principality. While the incidence rate is stabilising, bringing a halt to a significant increase over the last two weeks, it remains very high at 400 positive cases per 100,000 inhabitants during a seven-day period.

These figures show that we need to remain vigilant, although it is important to remember that the high number of positive cases is linked to the increase in antigen and PCR testing (5,300 tests were carried out between 18 and 24 January). The Principality conducts more testing than any other country in Europe.

Although hospitals are not overwhelmed, it should also be noted that they are facing growing demand. Hospital admissions are rising and the intensive care unit has been experiencing a degree of pressure in recent days – it is currently treating nine patients, four of whom are residents.

The Prince’s Government would like to stress that more than half of infections are occurring during private gatherings. Monaco’s health authorities continue to emphasise the need to act with utmost caution and to limit such gatherings as far as possible. It is absolutely vital to comply with barrier measures when spending time with family: more frequent hand-washing, ventilating the room that you are in and avoiding sharing cutlery and glasses. Everyone must take precautions to protect themselves and others. The Government will be running an information campaign on this issue to raise awareness, once again, among all Monegasque nationals and residents.

The curfew between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. will now remain in place for an additional three weeks. The same applies to the rules in place on eating in restaurants and cafés at lunchtime: access is restricted to residents and employees working in the Principality, booking is mandatory, no more than six guests may be seated at one table, and service may only be offered between 11.30 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Finally, the Government is once again stressing the need for widespread adoption of teleworking in the public and private sectors until further notice. The aim is to reduce the number of people coming into the Principality from outside while ensuring that the economy continues to function.

The Prince’s Government reserves the right to make changes to these measures as the health situation develops, in consultation with the National Council.
