The second meeting of the National Committee for Monitoring Marine Protected Areas, which is made up of representatives from the Government, the Prince Albert II Foundation, the Institute of Oceanography, Monaco Scientific Centre, the Department of the Environment and the Department of Maritime Affairs, was held at the Ministry of State on Monday 28 September 2020.

The Principality has two marine protected areas (MPAs), Larvotto and the Spélugues coral reef, which were established in 1976 and 1986 respectively. Management of the areas is entrusted to the Monegasque Association for the Protection of Nature (AMPN).

Governance of the MPAs is the responsibility of the National Committee for Monitoring Marine Protected Areas, which is charged with setting out guidelines for their management to an MPA coordination group and the AMPN as the managing organisation.

Several issues were discussed during the meeting, including MPA governance and progress with the current study to develop an MPA Management Plan. This is an important step in the process of building consensus between stakeholders around the marine environment and management of Monaco’s MPAs. The aim was to provide an update on scientific knowledge, strengthen links with institutions and scientists, and clarify the governance arrangements for the sites.

In light of the current circumstances, some participants attended the meeting in person and others via videoconference.
