Winning drawing of competition organised to celebrate 1st Monacollecte event reproduced on SMA electric waste disposal lorry
As part of the first MONACOLLECTE community event sponsored by Samuel le Bihan and organised on 25 and 26 February 2022 by the Prince's Government and the Monegasque Sanitation Company (SMA), a drawing competition was launched for pupils in Year 4 (CE2) at the Principality’s primary schools.
The 59 drawings produced by pupils at the Fontvieille, Saint Charles and Révoires primary schools, all on the theme of waste collection, were then displayed in the middle of the community village, where visitors were encouraged to vote for their favourite so that it could be reproduced to decorate one of the Principality’s electric waste disposal lorries.
Yesterday afternoon, the drawing which won the competition with 22% of the votes and the electric waste disposal lorry which it adorns were unveiled on the square in front of Saint Charles primary school, in the presence of Isabelle Bonnal, Commissioner General for the Department of Education, Youth and Sport, Thierry Francart, Executive Director of SMA, and Laurence Marty, representing the Department of Urban Amenities.
Ms Bonnal noted the importance of sorting and recycling waste in order to help achieve the ambitious environmental goal set by H.S.H. the Sovereign Prince: “By 2050, the word ‘waste’ will have disappeared from our vocabulary, and what is useless to some people will become a resource for others.” Mr Francart said that MONACOLLECTE had enabled the collection of 9.7 tonnes in donations to charities, and 3.9 tonnes of waste processed and recycled by SMA. It had brought together 140 participants and helped raise awareness among the Principality’s schoolchildren as well as more than 3,000 visitors to the event.
