The Principality supports the International Maritime Organization's Commitment to Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions

With regard to greenhouse gases, the 174 member countries and associate countries of the IMO issued a road map that provides for the adoption in spring 2018 of an initial strategy to reduce emissions, comprised of a list of measures for the short, medium and long terms.

To this end, it was decided to set up a working group, which will continue negotiations between the environmental sessions.  As a reminder, to support the reaching of an agreement, the Principality of Monaco and 10 partner States (Germany, Belgium, Denmark, Morocco, Ivory Coast, Marshall Islands, Solomon Islands, Antigua, Barbados and Tonga) submitted a position document to the IMO in August proposing a method to advance the issue of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions arising from maritime transport.

The international data collection system showing fuel consumption, which was decided upon at the 69^th session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) in April 2016, was adopted definitively last week.  This system will make it possible to have a precise knowledge of emissions from the maritime sector and will be an important basis for the implementation of future regulatory measures.

The IMO has also set a schedule for the phases of data collection from autumn 2020, which should make it possible to adjust the emission reduction strategy and the regulatory instruments by spring 2023 at the latest.
