Earth Hour is on Saturday 19 March

At the request of H.S.H. the Sovereign Prince, the Monegasque community is invited to join the Prince’s Government and the Prince Albert II Foundation for the 10th international Earth Hour initiative on Saturday 19 March 2016. The theme of this year’s event is “Shining a Light on Climate Action”.

Initiated by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) in 2007, Earth Hour involves switching off lights and unplugging non-essential electrical appliances for an hour to promote the ideas of saving energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions and, consequently, to raise awareness of the fight against climate change.

Last year, 172 countries, including the Principality of Monaco, got involved in the initiative.

Now, following the international agreement on limiting global warming reached during COP 21, raising public awareness is even more important since the latest data published by the Monegasque Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (IMSEE) shows that in less than 50 years, the average temperature in the Principality has increased by 1.5°C.

Monegasques and residents of the Principality are therefore invited to switch off their lights and unplug their non-essential appliances between 8.30 and 9.30 p.m. on Saturday 19 March.
