On the initiative of the Department of Cultural Affairs, the renowned Monegasque painter Claude Gauthier is exhibiting more than 125 paintings at the Rainier III Auditorium.  The exhibition runs until 17 November 2019.

Above all, Claude Gauthier is inspired by the Principality, which provides subject matter for his work.  He also draws inspiration from the local area and the faraway countries he has visited, such as Mexico and Réunion.  This artist, who describes his painting as "beautifully naïve," places great importance on the preparatory work for his paintings - historical research and drawing are the bases for creating his brightly coloured works.

The oldest painting, "Le pardon" ("The Pardon") dates back to 1969; the most recent, "Fiefs des Grimaldi" ("Fiefdoms of the Grimaldis"), makes reference to the 2nd Meeting of Historical Sites of the Grimaldis of Monaco, which took place in 2019.  One painting is particularly dear to Claude Gauthier – a fresco dedicated to the achievements of Prince Rainier III, painted in May 1999.

Through these works, the public will be able to take a stroll around the streets of Monaco, and also familiarise themselves with the history of the Principality, in particular that of the former fiefdoms of the Grimaldis, Albert I, the Ballets Russes, numerous sports competitions, the Monte-Carlo International Circus Festival, and more.

Claude Gauthier exhibits his works throughout the world; his exhibitions make him a representative of the Principality beyond its borders.  His works are owned by various collectors and museums.
