[LECTURE] - Barbara Cassin – Developments in philosophy: Experiencing the differences between languages

In partnership with Philosophical Encounters of Monaco, the Prince Pierre Foundation is presenting a chance to hear from Barbara Cassin. The event will be held on Wednesday 23 June at the Maison des Océans in Paris. During the lecture, the philosopher will talk about her relationship with language, languages and translation, using as her starting point her love of Greek and the surprising pleasure she draws from translation, between poetry and philosophy.

A Research Director at the National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), Barbara Cassin specialises in Greek philosophy. In 2018, she became the ninth woman to be elected to the Académie Française. She focuses on what words can do, on rhetoric, sophistry and psychoanalysis, and on our relationship with language and translation. A Knight of the Legion of Honour, she was awarded the Philosophy Grand Prix by the Académie Française in 2012 and the French Voices Grand Prize 2015. © John Foley/Opale

While it is difficult – even impossible – to define precisely what a philosopher is, their careers always provide an insight into what has motivated them and continues to guide their thinking. In this lecture, Barbara Cassin will share her work on language differences, relying particularly on the collective work of the Dictionary of Untranslatables: A Philosophical Lexicon, which, paradoxically, has itself been translated and adapted for ten languages. She will consider what it means to translate untranslatables, what is translation? Is it possible to illustrate something as abstract as translation through an exhibition? She will reflect on the various exhibitions that she has been able to put on, each linked to a particular time and location.

Finally, commenting on Umberto Eco’s statement that “the language of Europe is translation”, Barbara Cassin will examine how translation, which is so familiar with differences, can serve not only as an epistemological model, but as a political one, too, for thinking about citizenship today.

Philosophical Encounters  and the Prince Pierre Foundation have joined forces to present a lecture inviting a philosopher to share their intellectual journey, their creative process and the direction of their research.

The lecture will be broadcast live on the Prince Pierre Foundation’s YouTube channel and Facebook page.
