A travelling exhibition, “Le Chat Déambule” (“The Meandering Cat”), devoted to Belgian artist Philippe Geluck’s famous “Cat”, is being presented in Monaco by the Department of Cultural Affairs. Over the course of a fun, poetic and surreal trail, visitors can discover 20 monumental sculptures, each 2.7 metres tall and weighing 2.5 tonnes, on the Promenade du Larvotto from 6 July to 2 October 2022.

On the basis of a detailed sketch, the artist conceived each sculpture as a standalone story, just as he did with each of his newspaper cartoons. From Chaltérophile to Tutu et Grominet via Le Martyre du Chat, in tribute to the Charlie Hebdo cartoonists, these imposing works required two years of work and the involvement of around 60 people.

A cartoonist, humourist, actor, and radio and television presenter, Philippe Geluck has become a sculptor and has brought his cat to life in three dimensions ahead of the opening in Brussels in 2024 of a museum devoted to his feline creation and to cartoons. In the meantime, the Cat is meandering around French and European cities, including Paris, Bordeaux, Caen and Geneva, attracting more than 6 million visitors.

A free Le Chat Déambule app (which can be downloaded on iOS and Android) offers some educational insight and bonus information about each of the statues.
