On Wednesday 11 July, the Minister of State enjoyed a preview of the Oceanographic Museum’s new space dedicated to the commitment of the Princes of Monaco to understanding and protecting the marine world. He was accompanied by Minister of Public Works, the Environment and Urban Development Marie-Pierre Gramaglia and representatives from various institutions* in the Principality.

Staged around a 27-metre-long ship, this interactive space covering 700m2 fundamentally reinvents the visitor experience offered by the Museum, combining optical theatre, multimedia techniques and various other tricks of the trade.

It traces more than 100 years of history and offers an overview of current challenges involved in protecting the oceans, highlighting the princes who have been passionate about the sea and at the forefront of the evolving relationship between humans and the ocean:

  • Albert I, the humanist prince who pioneered modern oceanography and early thinking on the conservation of resources
  • Rainier III, who introduced the first measures to protect the Mediterranean, based on the explorations of Commander Cousteau
  • H.S.H. Prince Albert II, who talks about his first-hand experience and brings together today’s experts and decision-makers to protect the oceans

The aim of this new space is to mobilise the Oceanographic Museum’s 650,000 annual visitors through a fun, educational and stimulating approach, inviting them to join H.S.H. the Sovereign Prince in taking action to protect our blue planet.
