The Fondation Prince Pierre de Monaco announces the shortlisted authors for the Literary Award (Le Prix Littéraire) and the Discovery Grant (La Bourse de la Découverte)

Every year the Fondation Prince Pierre de Monaco honours two writers with awards for their contribution to literature. One writer is awarded with the Literary Award (Le Prix Littéraire) and a prize of €25,000, and the other is awarded the Discovery Grant (La Bourse de la Découverte) and a prize of €12,000.

The Fondation Prince Pierre de Monaco was first established in 1966 by H.S.H. Prince Rainier III, in tribute to the memory of His Father Prince Pierre, a great patron of literature and the arts. Today the Foundation, which is chaired by H.R.H the Princess of Hanover, continues its founder’s aims to promote contemporary creativity.

The 2020 Literary Council, which originally planned to convene in May in Paris to decide on the shortlisted authors for this year’s awards, this year had to take into account the unprecedented situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.  As a result, the council members were asked to draw up the shortlist of authors for the Literary Award and the Discovery Grant remotely.

Created in 1951, the Literary Award honours a well-known Francophone writer for the body of work they have produced throughout their career. The shortlist of authors chosen for the Fondation Prince Pierre de Monaco 2020 Literary Award is:

-          Metin ARDITI

-          Elisabeth BARILLÉ

-          Christian BOBIN

-          Etienne DE MONTETY

-          Pierre MICHON

The Discovery Grant, created in 2001 for the 50th anniversary of the Literary Prize, is given each year to a French-speaking author on the occasion of the publication of their first work of fiction. The authors shortlisted for the 2020 Discovery Grant are:

-          Salomé BERLEMONT-GILLES for Le Premier qui tombera, Éditions Grasset

-          Maylis BESSERIE for Le Tiers temps, Éditions Gallimard

-          Victoria MAS for Le Bal des folles, Éditions Albin Michel

-          Anne PAULY for Avant que j'oublie, Éditions Verdier

-          Philippe RIDET for Ce crime est à moi, Éditions des Équateurs

The winners of the Literary Prize and the Discovery Grant will be announced on Tuesday 13 October 2020, during an Award Ceremony hosted by the Fondation Prince Pierre de Monaco at the Garnier Opera House in Monaco.

The works by writers shortlisted for the Literary Prize and the Discovery Grant will be included in the Foundation’s annual reading event, the ‘Marathon de Lecture’. Despite the launch of this year’s event being cancelled due the current global health crisis, participating libraries will still receive a copy of each of the shortlisted novels to enable this event to continue nonetheless.

Each year H.S.H. the Sovereign Prince awards a prize based on the proposals of the Foundation’s three councils; the Literary Council, the Music Council, and the Artistic Council:

- the Literary Award and the Discovery Grant are granted annually

- the Award for Musical Composition is given every three years (next in 2021)

- the International Award for Contemporary Art is granted every three years (next in 2022).
