"Marginalia – Inside the Comic Art Collections" – NMNM – Villa Sauber – 1 April–5 September

From 1 April to 5 September, the NMNM is presenting a brand new, original exhibition at Villa Sauber: Marginalia – Inside the Comic Art Collections. The exhibition is built around loans from public and private collections, and brings together work by more than 90 artists who are among the biggest names in comic book art.

Comics, which are still a young art, offer a mix of marginality, humour, counterculture and popular culture. They represent an artform which has found its place in museums without giving up its transgressive purpose or seeking to promote its commercialization.

Underpinning the exhibition is the principle of marginalia – small drawings, often secular, sometimes fascinating, found in the margins of medieval manuscripts and representing notes, drawings or comments made by copyists or readers.

Both those who are new to the artform and those who are longstanding fans will have the opportunity to discover or rediscover well-known and previously unseen works of graphic art selected by curators Marie-Claude Beaud, Damien MacDonald and Stéphane Vacquier, and showcased in a space designed by Berger&Berger that offers fresh perspectives on the work of the artists exhibited.

The exhibition is running from 1 April to 5 September at Villa Sauber, 17 Avenue Princesse Grace
