Certification for the Former "Fiefdoms" of the Grimaldi Dynasty

The first "Historical Sites of the Grimaldis of Monaco" certificates were awarded today to four artisan producers who are taking part in the 24th Monte-Carlo Gastronomie food fair.

Albert Croesi, Managing Director of Monaco Inter Expo (MIE), and Thomas Fouilleron, Director of the Archives and Library of the Prince's Palace, have drawn up the charter and the procedures for this certification of regional products, which aims to promote the traditions and know-how of the former fiefdoms of the Grimaldi family.

"This certification, for which a label will be affixed to the products, is a natural and logical extension of the Meeting of Historical Sites of the Grimaldis of Monaco, which the MIE has held for the past two years in the Place du Palais. The aim of the Meeting of Historical Sites of the Grimaldis of Monaco is to present the history of the former "fiefdoms" to visitors, linking these fiefdoms to the Grimaldi dynasty, and to promote these French and Italian territories and their cultural heritage," recalled Albert Croesi.

By enabling traders to benefit from the Principality's image and by recognising their membership of a group of places that have historic links to the Grimaldis, this certification makes it possible to create a circle of friendship. "The network of Historical Sites of the Grimaldis of Monaco has a potential of approximately 150 communities. The first products, which we have just certified, come from the Valentinois and Matignon, territories with a wonderful gastronomic tradition and centuries-old links with the Principality," stated Thomas Fouilleron.

The certified products must comply with specific criteria: they must be from local agrifood or artisanal production, in a territory of the "Historical Sites of the Grimaldis of Monaco." They can also be regional products from a particular "terroir," local gastronomic specialities or be recognised for their intangible cultural heritage. A folk group in one of the towns concerned could therefore be certified in this way. The departments of the Historic Site towns will be responsible for providing Monaco Inter Expo with an objective opinion on the tradition, authenticity and quality of the products that have been awarded this certification, and also for checking that the holders of this certification comply with the charter.
