Operation Grand Ida, temporary partial closure of the Dorsale tunnel

Operation Grand Ida is a major urban redevelopment project being carried out as part of the National Housing Plan, which will see 160 state-owned dwellings delivered by 2023.

For safety reasons, on-going work to complete this project, and specifically the access to the future underground car park (entrance via the Dorsale tunnel and exit via the Fontvieille tunnel), requires the corresponding roads to be temporarily closed in one or both directions. This is because the work carried out involves shutting down the smoke clearance systems.

In view of the noise and vibrations generated, and in order to preserve the quality of life of residents living nearby (at Les Jardins d’Apolline and Hélios), the Government has ordered that work be carried out exclusively during the day (rather than during both the day and night, as originally planned).

A decision has also been made to conduct the work during the school holidays, when traffic is lighter, despite the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters taking place during this period.

Consequently, from today and until 23 April, only a single lane of traffic will be in operation between the Aureglia and Canton underground roundabouts. Traffic will alternate in the following directions and at the following times:

  • 7 am to 12 pm: Road open in the direction of Menton only
  • 12 pm to 8 pm: Road open in the direction of Nice only

This section of the Dorsale tunnel will be closed at night in both directions.

The Fontvieille tunnel will be closed to traffic travelling downhill:

  • 24 hours a day until 15 April
  • From Tuesday 19 April at 7.30 am until 20 April at 4 pm
  • From Thursday 21 April at 7.30 am until 24 April at 9 pm

Vehicles will still be able to enter and leave the Fontvieille district via the Liaison Marquet or the tunnels under the Rock, via Avenue du Port or towards Boulevard Albert 1er.

Operation Grand Ida is being constructed in the Plati district, above Place Canton and behind a covered trench (Dorsale) which houses underground roads and roundabouts. It is part of an extensive redevelopment of this district, with a new dynamic, composition, morphology, and access.

The planned real estate complex will include state-owned and private housing, a car park, nursery, adult daycare centre and collective residential units, offices, and shops. The state-owned buildings are due for delivery in the fourth quarter of 2023.
