On the 104th anniversary of the 11 November 1918 Armistice, which ended four terrible years of fighting, the Principality’s firefighters gathered this morning in front of the First World War memorial on Place du Campanin to honour and pay tribute to the commitment, including making the ultimate sacrifice, of Monaco’s firefighters in the conflict.

The extremely solemn ceremony was held in several stages under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel Maxime Yvrard, Chief Officer of the Monaco Fire and Emergency Service, and attended by Colonel Tony Varo, Supreme Commander of the Military Force. An individual tribute was paid to each of the 14 firefighters who died during the conflict, including Commander Auguste Picandet, the first chief officer of the service following its establishment in 1909 by Prince Albert I. A prayer to the dead, “Aux Morts”, was also read by Father Christian Venard, Chaplain of the Military Force. The ceremony concluded with the laying of a wreath by the authorities.
