The Economic and Social Council recently hosted the ninth Assembly of the Young People’s Economic and Social Council, during which 36 pupils from the Principality’s public and private secondary schools, divided into four working groups, presented their proposals.

In partnership with the Department of Education, Youth and Sport, this year the Economic and Social Council asked the pupils to focus on environmental and sustainable development themes.

Four proposals were presented for a vote at the Assembly:

-          Creation of a cable link between the cruise terminal and Monaco-Ville

-          Creation of a wave power station

-          Measures to achieve zero waste in school catering

-          Enhancement of soft mobility options by developing green traffic lanes

As in previous years, students at the 2015–2016 session of the Young People’s Economic and Social Council developed and championed their projects on a voluntary basis, under the supervision of members of the Economic and Social Council and their teachers.

Numerous discussions with representatives of the Prince’s Government and the private sector allowed the groups of pupils to construct well-argued and relevant projects.

The Young People’s Economic and Social Council was established by the Economic and Social Council with a view to getting pupils involved in the future of their country and giving them an opportunity to develop their listening, teamwork and constructive debating skills.

As an organisational link in the chain, the Economic and Social Council then transmits their proposals to the Prince’s Government, which follows them up as appropriate.

All of the proposals put forward by the ninth Young People’s Economic and Social Council have been adopted.
