Princess Grace Hospital introduces new mobility plan

Princess Grace Hospital is gradually introducing a new mobility plan. The initiative is part of an overall strategy to improve accessibility for patients, health professionals and visitors, including those with reduced mobility or who find it difficult to get around.

The new mobility plan, called for by the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs, is an integral element of a comprehensive sustainable development approach launched by H.S.H. the Sovereign Prince and implemented by the Prince’s Government.

In 2015, car traffic was strictly controlled within the hospital, and a renovated public car park was opened for patients and visitors, who will now benefit from new directional signage within the hospital.

From Monday 14 March 2016, the mobility plan will enter into its second phase, which covers the movement of people within the complex.

Among the innovations being introduced are small electric vehicles which will provide transport on request and self-service wheelchairs.

Electric transport on request

Two small electric vehicles will be available to Princess Grace Hospital users on request. They will run between all of the hospital buildings and particularly from the car park exit on the esplanade or from the Concierge Service. This type of innovative and highly efficient service has already been successfully tested in several large ‘pavilion’-style hospitals.

On a practical level, the vehicles can be hailed at any point along their route. Patients and visitors who require assistance can also call the drivers via the hospital reception staff, dispatchers or using an intercom which has been specially installed at the car park exit. The service is available Monday–Friday, between 7.45 a.m. and 7.30 p.m.

In terms of sustainable development, these electric vehicles will help Princess Grace Hospital in its efforts to provide a high-quality welcome. They are non-polluting and discreet, and will naturally encourage everyone to use Monaco’s buses for the rest of their visit.

Self-service wheelchairs

Wheelchairs will be made available at various points around the hospital for self-service use by people with reduced mobility and those accompanying them.

They are a significant bonus for accompanied patients, since they will help them to get around without the constraint of needing to wait, when it is not necessary, for an ambulance or patient transport vehicle. The wheelchairs are symbolic of the hospital’s focus on its patients’ wellbeing.

Wheelchairs are available from and can be returned to various patient arrival points, on a self-service basis:

                 - Concierge Service

                - Reception/Admissions Office

                - Accident and Emergency

                - Louis II Pavilion, level -1 (exit from car park to consultations unit)

                - Louis II Pavilion, ground level (general exit from car park)

Having achieved its certification with a maximum A grade from the Haute Autorité de Santé (the French National Authority for Health) in July 2015, which highlighted the quality and safety of the care it provides, Princess Grace Hospital is continuing to pursue a policy of excellence at all levels, including in the welcome it offers. These new measures are therefore a further asset for the hospital, which already has a hotel service unlike anything else offered in the sector, and will consolidate its position as the leading light in healthcare provision in Monaco and the region.

Sustainable development at Princess Grace Hospital

“The needs of current generations must be met without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs.” Sustainable development comprises three aspects: 1- environmental,2- social/societal,3- economic.

Sustainable development has become a critical component of the strategy of businesses and organisations, including in the hospital sector. In 2010, Princess Grace Hospital adopted it as an integral part of its policy. To this end, numerous improvement initiatives have been introduced in all of the relevant areas.

The mobility plan is a key element of sustainable development and is the subject of reviews intended to guarantee the continuity of excellence of care, while taking into account the constraints imposed by the construction of the new hospital.
