Disabled housing: Government presents three major projects to meet all needs

In light of future developments in the field of disability, on Monday 9 March Minister of Health and Social Affairs, Didier Gamerdinger, presented to the press the various facilities for people with disabilities from the Association Monégasque pour l’Aide et la Protection des Enfants Inadaptés (AMAPEI, Monegasque Association for the Support and Protection of Children with Special Needs). The briefing was also attended by Ludmilla Raconnat Le Goff, Secretary-General of the Ministry, and Jean François Calmes, President of AMAPEI Monaco.

Founded in 1966 by Dr Christian Calmes and Dr Mireille Calmes, AMAPEI provides support to people with learning disabilities and their families through facilities including the Princess Stéphanie Centre in Cap d’Ail, which is open to adults with disabilities from Monaco (nationals and residents).

To respond to a number of problems including the current capacity of the building, which is insufficient to cover the future requirement estimated at 25 to 30 places, the Prince’s Government has decided to go ahead with three major projects simultaneously, in a bid to meet all needs:

  • a facility in the city to help promote social inclusion: several studio apartments with shared spaces, a specialist support worker and a care assistant in the future state-owned IDA project, due for delivery in 2023;
  • a centre in La Turbie on the Devens fields, close to CAPS2, which could be delivered in 2022;
  • a medical care home for older people with disabilities on a dedicated floor of the future Cap Fleuri 1 home in Cap d’Ail, in 2024.

“Thanks to collaboration with those working in the field, such as AMAPEI, it is possible to bring about genuine social inclusion” explained Didier Gamerdinger. “Today, the Prince’s Government wants to go further, with a model that helps people with disabilities to integrate fully into the city and will create an alternative view of disability.”

During the briefing, he also noted that half-price entertainment passes with no expiry date, issued by the Department of Social Welfare and Social Services, have been made available to all adults with disabled status in the Principality since 1 January 2020.
