Novel Coronavirus in China - Press release from the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs

Cases of pulmonary infections with a novel coronavirus, "2019-nCoV," have emerged in China.

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that are known to cause illnesses ranging from the common cold to more serious conditions.  A novel coronavirus is a new strain of coronavirus that has never previously been identified in humans.

The Ministry of Health and Social Affairs is keeping up to date with the situation – as a member of the World Health Organization, Monaco receives information in real time, within the framework of the International Health Regulations, of the measures to be taken as this situation develops.  The Department of Health Affairs is also monitoring the information provided by the French and Italian Health Ministries.

Only persons who have been exposed to the disease in the past 14 days, who have stayed in China or have been in close contact with a person infected with the virus and who present with a lower respiratory tract infection (with cough and fever) are regarded as being potentially infected.

Anyone who thinks they may have been infected should not go to their doctor or to a hospital, but should stay at home.

They should call the Monaco Fire and Emergency Service (on 18 or 112), which is in contact with a specialist doctor from the Princess Grace Hospital, who will determine what action should be taken.

The Department of Health Affairs has sent details of the procedures to be followed in the event of a possible case of the disease to the relevant services and health professionals.

Members of the public are advised to avoid visiting affected areas unless their travel is essential.

The Monegasque authorities are continuing to monitor the situation closely.
