Information published on violence against women in Monaco during 2020

The Women’s Rights Committee and Monaco Statistics (IMSEE) recently published a second study on violence against women in Monaco.

The publication sets out the key data that is available for 2020 and examines incidents of violence according to various measurable indicators.

The information was analysed by Monaco Statistics, which collected it from a variety of leading authorities in the Principality: the Police Department, the Department of Justice, Princess Grace Hospital, the Association for Support to Victims of Crime (AVIP) and the Department of Social Welfare and Social Services.

As Monaco Statistics Director Sophie Vincent notes, “this survey does not reflect the full experiences of the individuals recorded by the different organisations. The results presented are broken down by entity and should not under any circumstances be added together.”

The police recorded 39 incidents of violence against women in Monaco during 2020, compared with 33 in 2019.

Of the victims, 72% were resident in the Principality of Monaco, up from 58% in 2019.

The Department of Justice initiated proceedings in 50 cases, 20 of which related to incidents committed in 2020. Eight cases were dropped.

For its part, Princess Grace Hospital recorded 53 cases where women said that they had been subjected to violence, compared with 113 in 2019.

Finally, the AVIP was contacted by 42 female victims of violence while the Department of Social Welfare and Social Services recorded seven cases in 2020.

“The study shows that despite the unusual circumstances associated with the health crisis, women continue to make their voices heard, and that counting these violent incidents helps to ensure that they are recognised,” commented Chief Women’s Rights Officer Céline Cottalorda.
