On Monday 30 October 2017, at a lunch, Gilles Tonelli, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, received H.E. Mr. Pieter de Gooijer, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of the Netherlands;  H.E. Ms. Patricia O' Brien, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ireland and H.E. Mr. Fernando Carderera Soler, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Spain, who presented their Letters of Credence to H.S.H. the Sovereign Prince during the morning.

H.E. Mr. Pieter de Gooijer joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) in 1982, where he rose through the ranks to hold the posts, successively, of Director of Political Affairs, Director of European Integration and Director General of Political Affairs.  From 1985 to 1988, H.E. Mr. Gooijer was also First Secretary of the Embassy responsible for trade affairs in the Netherlands and Turkey.

A lawyer by training, H.E. Ms. Patricia O' Brien pursued a legal career before taking the post of Director of Legal Affairs at the Permanent Representation of Ireland to the European Union in Brussels in 1998.  She was appointed Senior Legal Advisor to the Attorney General in Dublin in 2002 and Director of Legal Affairs at the MFA in 2004.  She then became Legal Advisor to the United Nations Organization before being promoted to Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Ireland to the United Nations in 2013.

H.E. Mr. Fernando Carderera Soler was appointed Counsellor at the Permanent Representation of Spain to the European Communities in Brussels in 1987.  He became Director General of Coordination of General and Technical Affairs of the European Union in 1998, before being promoted to Ambassador to Finland in 2000 and to Estonia in 2004.  He also held the post of Advisor to the Cabinet of the Secretary of State for the European Union, then Minister Counsellor at the Spanish Embassy in Paris.  He served as Ambassador of Spain to Israel from 2012 to April 2017.

Following a discussion of the current situation, it was confirmed to the Ambassador of Spain that the Principality of Monaco considers that the Constitution of each State must be respected.  Any situation must therefore be resolved within the framework of the rule of law.
