EXPO 2020 DUBAI postponed until 2021

It’s official: EXPO 2020 DUBAI, in which Monaco is taking part, has been postponed until 2021. The universal exposition will now be held from 1 October 2021 to 31 March 2022, but will still be known as EXPO 2020 DUBAI.

At the request of the United Arab Emirates and the Dubai organisers, the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) called on its member countries to take a view on the possibility of postponing the event.

Assessing the impact that the health crisis could have on public health, and taking account of the fact that the economy will unquestionably have slowed and that restrictions on international travel will no doubt remain, the vast majority of countries agreed with the postponement.

Expositions cancelled or postponed in the past

Every universal or international exposition has its own historical context and EXPO 2020 DUBAI is not alone in having suffered such a fate. In 1942, the Italian capital was forced to cancel its exposition due to the Second World War and in 1955, Brussels postponed its official opening by three years as a result of the Korean War and the prevailing international tensions. More recently, in 2002 French Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin decided to cancel plans for a 2004 International Expo set to be held in Seine-Saint-Denis due to the financial risks of the project.

Monaco Pavilion on track for 2021

Albert Croesi, Managing Director of Monaco Inter Expo (MIE), notes that the MIE teams remain mobilised in Dubai, with a target of completing construction of the Monaco Pavilion by the end of next summer. “On the other hand, I now need to rethink the event schedule, which was planned for this year. I will very shortly be contacting all of the partners and contributors who signed up to help us in Dubai. I hope that they will continue to show the same commitment despite this postponement, since their support is invaluable to showcasing the many sides of the Principality on the international stage. Monaco 360 must retain its full meaning,” he said.
