Prince Albert II; Isabelle Berro-Amadeï, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation; Mgr Vincenzo Paglia, President of the Pontifical Academy for Life; H.E. Claude Giordan, Monaco’s Ambassador to the Holy See.

On 20 July 2022, Isabelle Berro-Amadeï, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, and Marco Impagliazzo, President of the Comunità di Sant’Egidio, signed a memorandum of understanding in Rome, in the presence of H.S.H. Prince Albert II.

The signature of this memorandum enables the Prince’s Government and the Comunità di Sant’Egidio to strengthen their cooperation in Africa and the Middle East over the long term, in order to ensure dignity and equality, tackle all forms of poverty, and promote educational, social and health initiatives. The aim of the two partners is to cooperate in emergency and crisis situations in areas of shared priority, in order to improve access to a decent standard of living for all.

The Comunità di Sant’Egidio is a longstanding ally of Monaco’s Department of International Cooperation. The partnership covers areas including health, education and child protection, as well as hosting and integrating refugees, in numerous countries such as Burkina Faso, Lebanon, Malawi, Mozambique and Syria, expanding to Burundi in 2023.

Monaco is supporting three of the Comunità di Sant’Egidio’s flagship programmes: the BRAVO birth registration programme, the DREAM HIV/AIDS in Africa programme, and the Humanitarian Corridors programme for refugees in the Middle East. The agreements on the latter two programmes were also renewed at the same time as the memorandum was signed.

On this occasion, Isabelle Berro-Amadeï was keen to congratulate the Comunità di Sant’Egidio “for the boldness and courage of its tireless work, across all continents, to tackle poverty in all its forms.”

Finally, a visit to a language school developed by the Comunità di Sant’Egidio for refugees was organised, giving the Monegasque delegation led by H.S.H. the Sovereign Prince a chance to meet some of the young refugees and hear their stories.
