The Prince's Government has responded to an urgent appeal launched by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) to provide food and nutritional assistance to 50,000 Malian refugees in the Mberra camp in south-eastern Mauritania.

The refugees have been accommodated in the Mberra camp since 2012, having fled the conflict in Northern Mali.  They depend on humanitarian aid to meet their basic needs, particularly food requirements.

In this camp, the WFP, which provides food to all the refugees, is also distributing nutritional supplements enriched with vitamins and trace elements to children under five and to pregnant and nursing woman, to prevent and treat malnutrition.

Thanks to the aid provided, a hot meal is also served every day to children from primary schools near the camp and in the "child-friendly areas."  These are safe areas in which children can play and socialise.

With the worsening of the humanitarian situation in the Sahel, the return of Malian refugees to their country of origin is not feasible in the short term;  that is why it is a priority to maintain this vital assistance.
