Principality promotes inclusion policies for people with disabilities at UN

S.E.Mme Isabelle Picco lors de son allocution à l'ONU

On 2 October, H.E. Ms Isabelle Picco, Monaco’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, gave a presentation to the UN Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Issues Committee on the measures taken by the Monegasque Government to ensure that people with disabilities are included in social activities: assistance and grants for housing, transport, medical services and access to sport and culture.

While the instrument of ratification for the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities was submitted on 19 September last year, in the margins of the 72nd United Nations General Assembly, the Ambassador took this opportunity to talk about the sporting, educational and recreational activities promoted by Monegasque organisations and charities. Au-delà de nos Handicaps (Beyond our Handicaps) and Monaco Disease Power were cited as examples: the former works to secure the empowerment and social reintegration of people with disabilities, while the latter takes action to assist children and young people with learning disabilities.

According to the UN Secretary-General, around the world just 28% of people with severe disabilities receive a disability allowance. Disability affects 15% of the global population.
