In conjunction with the Astana 2017 specialised exposition, the World Tourism Organization, a UN agency of which Monaco is a member, held a conference on the theme “Tourism and Future Energy: Unlocking Low-Carbon Growth Opportunities”.

Guillaume Rose, Director of the Tourist and Convention Authority, had the privilege of representing Monaco at the conference. It was an opportunity for him to address topics associated with the responsible development of tourism in the Principality in front of representatives from around the world.

During his presentation on “transport and sustainable mobility in the tourism sector”, Guillaume Rose highlighted the work done by the Principality in this area: the use of clean vehicles, the Mobee electric car sharing scheme, the CAM electric bike service, and public transport vehicles powered by bio-fuels.

He then recalled that urban infrastructure facilitates travel by foot in the Principality, particularly when it comes to negotiating slopes.

In conclusion, Guillaume Rose talked about some cutting-edge projects in which Monaco is a stakeholder, including Planet Solar and Solar Impulse.

On 27 June, Mr Taleb Rifai, the Secretary-General of the World Tourism Organization, visited the Monaco Pavilion, taking the time to pause in the various spaces.

The Secretary-General’s visit ended with a meeting with Mr Alexandre Bocquillon, Deputy Commissioner of the Monaco Pavilion, and Mr Christophe Brico, the Tourist and Convention Authority’s representative at the exposition. Mr Rifai expressed his interest in even closer collaboration between Monaco and the World Tourism Organization.

Astana 2017 opened in June and is bringing together, over a period of three months, more than a hundred countries and around 20 international organisations across the various pavilions. With its key theme of “Future Energy”, Astana 2017 is seeking to raise the international community’s awareness of the problem of energy consumption, which is having an increasing impact on the planet.
