Saint Devota celebrations: Tuesday 26 January 2021 - Practical arrangements

© Direction de la Communication / Charly Gallo

The current circumstances and resulting health requirements mean that changes have had to be made to the arrangements for the Saint Devota festivities.

This year, therefore:

-        The timings of the ceremonies have been brought forward to comply with the 7 p.m. curfew (information is available on the Monaco City Hall website, www.mairie.mc );

-        Only duly authorised individuals will be able to take part in the Welcoming of the Relics and the Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament in the Church of Saint Devota;

-        There will be no public access to Place Sainte Dévote;

-        The burning of the boat will take place on the north side of Quai Albert I;

-        The fireworks have been cancelled.

A range of organisational, security and reception measures will be put in place on the north side of Quai Albert I from 4.30 p.m.

To facilitate the participation of the faithful in compliance with health measures, a seated public area with a capacity of 150 and with seats placed a safe distance apart will be organised to allow everyone to follow the ceremonies on a large screen.

After the ceremonies, it will not be possible for the public to try and recover the nails of the boat, as is customary.

The Government is counting on everyone to show a sense of civic responsibility and comply with health measures (compulsory mask-wearing, social distancing, etc.).

  • Railway station access

Rail passengers should note that the St. Devota valley will be closed to pedestrians from 4.30 p.m.

To reach or leave the station in the direction of Rue Grimaldi, you will need to use the Galerie Sainte-Dévote.

The St. Devota stairs will be closed from 4.30 p.m.

  • Practical traffic arrangements

 From 4.30 p.m. to 5.30 p.m., Route de la Piscine will be closed from Avenue J.F. Kennedy to the Jules Soccal Jetty.

Between 5.15 p.m. and 6.20 p.m., traffic will be intermittently stopped on Boulevard Albert I and Avenue d’Ostende to allow the event to proceed as planned.

  • Transport and parking arrangements
  • Slight delays should be expected on local (services 1-2 and 6) and intercity (services 100 and 110) buses during the traffic stoppages noted above.
  • With regard to public car parks (access/diversion), information will be provided to users (notices will be posted at car park access points) by the relevant organisation.

The Administration respectfully asks road users to take measures to avoid the area between the Church of St. Devota and Route de la Piscine, particularly between 4.15 p.m. and 6.20 p.m., and apologises in advance for any inconvenience caused by the festivities.
