Press Release from the Department of Justice

The secondment of French judges to Monaco is governed by the Convention between France and Monaco of 8 November 2005, which sets the duration of the secondment at three years, with the possibility of renewal.

The return of seconded judges who have left their posts in the Principality to their original body of judges, and their replacement, thus fall within the framework of the procedures agreed between France and Monaco.

The secondment of Mr. Edouard LEVRAULT, an examining judge who has been working in the Principality for almost three years, will expire on 1 September 2019.  It will not be renewed.

All ongoing cases will be taken over and dealt with by examining judges, who, like their predecessors, will have all the means available to them to enable them to carry out their role completely independently.

The creation by the Monegasque authorities of a third chamber of examining judges, in response to a wish of the judges, will also make it possible to deal with the volume of cases under investigation more efficiently and in all likelihood within a shorter period of time.  In addition, there will be two new seconded judges; one will occupy the 3rd chamber, and the other will replace Mr. Edouard LEVRAULT.

In the short term, the Monegasque judiciary will thus have three examining judges instead of the two at present.
